About Imad Hanna

Imad Hanna is a leading expert in the pharmaceutical industry specializing in the field of drug metabolism. Currently serving as Director of the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics Department at Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research, Imad is responsible for leading investigations into new medicines and determining the essential enzymes and transporters necessary for the drug to achieve safe elimination from the body.

With over 15 years of experience in the industry, Imad Hanna has enjoyed making a true difference in people’s lives. As a result of his department’s efforts, pharmaceutical companies are able to safely introduce new drugs to the market knowing that the body is able to properly absorb and eliminate the proper components.

Working in the field of drug metabolism has been a natural fit for Dr. Hanna, as it combines two of his favorite disciplines: biology and chemistry. His path towards a career in the pharmaceutical industry began at Oakland University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Department of Chemistry. He later went on to attend Wayne State University, earning a Ph.D., from the Department of Pharmacology.

Dr. Hanna was fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from one of the field’s leading experts while working toward his postdoctoral research fellowship [Note: would you like to provide the name of who you worked with]. As a member of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s Department of Biochemistry and Center in Molecular Toxicology, Imad Hanna was able to apply his knowledge in a more practical way and learn first hand what it takes to be successful in the industry.

Following his tenure with Vanderbilt, Imad Hanna went on to serve as an Associate Principle Scientist with Schering-Plough Research Institute, where he got his start in the field of Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics. Dr. Hanna later transitioned to Novartis Pharmaceuticals, assuming the role of Laboratory Head in Basel, Switzerland. During this time, he was able to learn how people from different areas of the world operate within the field. Furthermore, he established valuable connections with colleagues, which have aided in the implementation of global work stream initiatives.

In recognition of his expertise in the field of drug metabolism, Imad Hanna has frequently been asked to serve as a speaker and lecturer at a number of industry events. Additionally, he spent time as a Chairperson with the North Jersey Chapter of the American Chemical Society.

Outside of his professional endeavors in the laboratory, Imad Hanna is committed to advancing the field through his work in the classroom. He currently serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Rutger University’s Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. He has also played an instrumental role in over 25 different publications and two books related to drug metabolism.
